How To Get Started Planning Your Wedding

Wedding Planning Regina SK

Once you’ve said yes to forever with your person, it’s time to get started with planning the day of your dreams!

Let’s face it – the information overload on weddings is real! From the endless internet articles, Pinterest photos, and social media posts, to the opinions of family and friends, it’s incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed at the beginning.

We’re here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way. You can feel confident and organized from the get go by figuring out three key components of your day.

Keep reading to find out how you can get started and why figuring out what you want, what you can afford and what’s most important to you will limit your overwhelm and help along the way.

FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT

Wedding planning involves making a ton of decisions. Knowing what you want and don’t want, will make the overwhelm much easier to manage. Start by sitting down with your fiance and discussing your wants for your day. Do you want an indoor wedding or outdoor wedding? Big guest list, or small guest list? Local or destination? What season do you want to get married in? What overall vibe are you looking for?

Answering these questions will make figuring out the details later on easier because you’ll have an already established framework for what you want.

FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD

While getting married is a big life transition, a wedding in the traditional sense at its core is a party. A party that is very expensive. Having a clear understanding of what you’re wanting to spend, and what you can afford to spend from the beginning will make the entire process smoother. It’s easy to get lost along the way and suddenly end up $10,000 over budget if you haven’t clearly prioritized what you want to spend. I always tell every Wish client – your wedding shouldn’t cause you financial stress, and it’s not worth it to have a big, lavish day if it stretches you too far financially.

FIGURE OUT WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU

Once you know what you want, and you have your budget number sorted, you’ll need to figure out what is most important to you.

While getting married is the goal, my advice to couples is to pick your top three things you care about most on your wedding day. It can be anything – food, photography, decor, or music. With this list in mind, it will help you allocate budget, make decisions for time allocation within your day, and decide on vendors. For example, if food is important to you, perhaps you allocate more budget to the catering experience, and make sure guests are fed well all night with appetizers, a full dinner, dessert and a killer late night snack. If photography is important to you, perhaps you splurge on a photography package that includes a second shooter and you make sure you have a ton of time within your day for photos.

Following these steps will limit your overwhelm because you’ll have a clear framework for your entire planning journey. If you’re still needing some assistance, connect with us! A wedding coordinator, or even an hourly consult may be just what you need to help smooth the way.
